Have you ever considered getting a Botox treatment to tighten up your skin, smooth out forehead wrinkles, or even alleviate migraines?
Whether you’ve been considering Botox for aesthetic reasons or medical benefits, it’s important to do your research and ask your licensed practitioner any questions you may have regarding the treatment.
Here are answers to some commonly asked questions that people have regarding Botox.
How Does Botox Work?
The ingredients in Botox work to block some chemical signals from your nerves, and this temporarily relaxes the facial muscles around your forehead and eyes (the common injection sites) that cause wrinkles to appear.
Since Botox relaxes these muscles, it’s often also used to help reduce muscle twitching (such as eye or neck twitches) that can be uncomfortable or painful.
Botox can also help reduce frequent headaches and migraines and alleviate excess sweating for people with conditions such as hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating).
Does Botox Hurt?
In most cases, a numbing cream is applied before facial treatments to alleviate any pain or discomfort.
Since Botox is such a quick treatment (fifteen to twenty minutes) and the needle is so small, the amount of discomfort you should feel is very minimal. An anesthetic gel or cream can be used to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible during your appointment.
It’s important to visit a reputable clinic with certified practitioners, as they’ll be able to perform the treatment quickly and safely while ensuring that you feel comfortable and confident before and after your Botox treatment.
How Long Does Botox last?
A common inquiry people have is about how long Botox lasts. Generally, Botox should last for around three to six months. Ultimately, the length of time it lasts will vary from person to person.
It’s also common for your first Botox injection to last for a shorter period, but you should see results for a longer period (and an improvement in the look of wrinkles after it wears off) after your second injection.
What Can I Expect After My Appointment?
After your appointment, it’s important to avoid touching the injection site and doing any exercise for twenty-four hours. The reason is that increased blood flow to the area could push the Botox toxins (those that relax the muscles) to other areas of your face.
For this same reason, it’s important to stay upright for at least four hours afterwards.
Results will also not be visible immediately! It’ll take a few days before you begin to see improvements, and even up to two weeks before you’re able to see the final results.
Your esthetician will go over important aftercare instructions with you to ensure that you safely get the full effects of your treatment.
What’s the Ideal Age to Start Using Botox?
Botox is approved for use as soon as you turn eighteen, but it’s usually unnecessary at this age as it’s probably too early for you to have too many lines or wrinkles to worry about. However, if using Botox to help alleviate symptoms from medical issues such as excessive sweating or twitching, this treatment is suitable for anyone over the age of eighteen.
If you’re looking to begin Botox treatments for preventative purposes, a great time to consider this is in your mid-to-late twenties and early thirties.
